The phrase “You’re Just So Different” emerged over years of cross-cultural relationships, community engagement, storytelling, and collaborative work. It was something repeatedly said to founder Sarah Drake by Black and African friends, colleagues, and community members—not as separation, but as recognition. A recognition of listening differently, connecting differently, and moving through communities with curiosity, humanity, and care.
Over time, the phrase became something larger: a reflection on belonging, identity, trust, and the ways authentic connection can bridge differences between people, cultures, experiences, and systems. Today, You’re Just So Different exists as an invitation to explore creativity, storytelling, empathy, and human connection in ways that help people feel seen, valued, and connected across lines that too often divide us.
You’re Just So Different is a storytelling, art, and belonging-centered initiative rooted in the belief that the very things that make us different are often the things that connect us most deeply to one another.
